Confirming the platform before anything else

The useful questions are which device is installed on site, which generation it is, and whether lenticule extraction is performed there routinely or occasionally. A clinic that assesses patients and books the laser session at another facility is not the clinic performing the operation.

Those answers are usually available by email, which makes this the cheapest part of the trip to arrange and the most expensive to get wrong.

Which generation, and what that changes for you

Two platform generations perform the procedure, and clinics use the names loosely. What a patient can reasonably ask is how long the clinic has used the platform, roughly how many of these procedures are performed in a month, and what happens if the result needs refinement later.

The last question matters more than it sounds, because a procedure with no flap has its own revision path, and a clinic should be able to say which path it would use.

Fitting the visit around the equipment

The assessment, the procedure and at least one check have to fit inside the trip, with the contact lens interval before measurement accounted for. Where they do not fit, the usual arrangement is to be assessed on one visit and treated on the next, which also gives time to compare the second clinic properly.

Vision is often usable within a day, while the eye continues to settle for weeks, so the check before the flight is about the surface and the measurements rather than about the final result.

Follow-up in another country

Which checks are included, who can carry them out near home, and how the clinic is contacted if something changes. Ask for the arrangement in writing rather than verbally, because it is the part that is hardest to reconstruct later.

If the platform is not where you planned to go

Choosing a different procedure, or a different city, is a complete answer rather than a compromise. LASIK, Femto LASIK, PRK and TransPRK are all widely available, and the differences between them are a conversation worth having with a clinic rather than a reason to abandon the trip.
